Abstract: The need for a study of the welfare of the population is dictated by its importance for ensuring effective state and municipal governance. The existing natural, socio-economic, ecological, demographic differences of the subjects of the North Caucasus Federal District are expressed in the level of socio-economic potential of each of them, as well as the effectiveness of its use. All this underlies demographic growth, economic development of the territory and improvement of the welfare of the population, which, in the conditions of external negative impact and internal special attention, require systematic research today. The sources of information are information generated during statistical observation and sample surveys of the population. Their results allow for a more in-depth analysis of the achieved level of well-being of the population, to identify existing problems and possible ways to resolve them. An algorithm for assessing the welfare of the population by structures: income, expenditure, resources, consumption and indices is proposed.
