Abstract: Many publications have been devoted to assessing the level and quality of life, while the quantitative measurement of sustainability remains outside the focus of researchers. Therefore, the purpose of the study was to substantiate the methodology for assessing the sustainability of the growth of the standard and quality of life of the rural population, testing it on the example of the North-Western Federal District (NWFD). The research methodology was based on the principles, goals, indicators and indicators of the United Nations in the field of sustainable development. Quantitative calculations of the degree of stability were carried out using the Spearman rank correlation method. The sustainability assessment was carried out on the basis of official data from Rosstat. The calculation results showed a significant inter-regional differentiation of sustainability indicators. It has been established that in most regions the poverty rate is steadily decreasing. The level of income inequality between rural and urban populations is also decreasing with noticeable stability on average in the Northwestern Federal District. The index of active longevity is growing with high and very high stability on average in the Northwestern Federal District, the level of poverty and the level of atmospheric pollution are decreasing. At the same time, negative trends regarding the reproduction of the population and the labor force have been noted over the past decade. The net rate of reproduction of the rural population is decreasing with very high stability, and the rate of renewal of the able-bodied population is decreasing with noticeable stability. The approbation of the methodology has shown its suitability for the diagnosis of the sustainability of the growth of the standard and quality of life in various regions of the country.
