Abstract: The existing differences in the level of economic, social, environmental and institutional development of rural areas necessitate the optimization of resource distribution between the territories in order to reduce interregional asymmetry, which requires methodological support for a comprehensive analysis and development of practical recommendations for sustainable development of rural areas of the macroregion with different development potential. The aim of the study is to develop and test a methodological approach to a comprehensive study of sustainable development of rural areas of the macroregion. A historical and methodological analysis of the evolution of sustainable development indicator systems is conducted, and the results of a study by modern scientists on this issue are presented. The authors have developed and tested a methodological approach to assessing sustainable development of rural areas using the example of the North Caucasus economic region, which is based on the development of an algorithm for a two-factor integral-index analysis of rural areas of the macroregion, including data collection and normalization; calculation of integral indices – the index of sustainable development of the standard of living of the population (ISLDP), which aggregates indicators of quality of life, material well-being and healthy lifestyle, and the index of sustainable economic development of the territory (ISEDT), which includes indicators of socio-economic, scientific and technological development and the state of the labor market; construction of a two-dimensional model and subsequent classification of regions into 5 groups of sustainable development. The results of the study can be used by state and regional authorities to develop differentiated, targeted policies and make informed management decisions.
